4 Essential Changes for a Healthier Menopause Journey

4 Essential Changes for a Healthier Menopause Journey

The internet seems awash with quick fixes and remedies to suppress your menopause symptoms and ‘fight your meno belly’.

And it’s so easy to get caught up in this cycle of buying yet another supplement or product in the hope that it makes ‘the menopause‘ go away.

But it’s not all just about hot flushes, weight gain and negativity.

There is so much more to perimenopause that isn’t discussed openly and honestly about this beautiful, wise and empowering time.

So, rather than overloading you with more ‘stuff’ to do or worry about, let’s discuss the four things you should ditch for a healthier menopause.

Changing your perspective on menopause

I know you might be thinking that I lured you in by suggesting that these were little changes that you could do that would create a big, positive impact on your menopausal transition.

But have you ever had one of those moments when you realised how you were ‘looking’ at a particular situation influenced your experiences? Some would call this an ‘aha moment’, when you realise that things aren’t the way you thought they were.

I think most of us can relate to this feeling; it’s when you turn a corner with your beliefs and realise that how you view a particular situation has a powerful impact on your mental, emotional and physical health.

And when you can take your focus away from the negative stuff, you can begin to see the good stuff. And the more you notice the good stuff, the more you seem to attract around you.

Break up with alcohol

I know, I know, I’m going in hard with the big ones here. And I understand that everyone has a different relationship with alcohol. Honestly, this is just a suggestion, something you can try to see if it works for you. I encourage you to let me know about your experiences.

In my experience (both professional and personal), alcohol is going to make your transition through menopause so much worse – the flushes, the anxiety, the inflammation, the moods, and not to mention your bank account.

And if you’re wondering why I’m suggesting that you break up with alcohol or have more of a casual and occasional relationship. Simply put, the extra strain that alcohol puts on your liver will impact your body’s ability to regulate hormones, often triggering hot flushes, night sweats, or headaches.

And when you can make the connection between alcohol and how you’re feeling during your menopausal transition, it can make this relationship change so much easier.

Get rid of the TV remote

Movement is one of your biggest allies during your menopausal transition. While you’re not using alcohol to create a ‘feeling’ of feeling better, physical activity can help you actually feel better.

You know what it’s like after you’ve gone for a nice brisk walk or a swim at the beach? You feel invigorated and alive – your blood is circulating, your lymphatic system is moving, you’re using those muscles you don’t usually notice, and you’re promoting the production of a whole bunch of happy-feeling neurotransmitters.

And if you keep yourself active during your menopausal transition and move your body, you’ll have a much healthier future ahead of you.

Destroy those social expectations of youth equalling beauty

(Unfortunately) we live in a society that puts so much emphasis on a woman’s physical appearance. And if a woman doesn’t fit into these narrow expectations of ‘beauty’, then she can be drawn to the idea of trying to make herself look more socially acceptable to fit into these expectations.

Trying to look younger, thinner, or like you did in your 20s will not only lead to disappointment and lack of self-acceptance but also waste a great deal of your time and energy trying to squeeze your body into a whole bunch of unrealistic expectations.

What if you embraced your ‘imperfections’ and saw those bumps, wrinkles, and scars as symbolic representations of the beautiful experiences in your life, overcoming challenges, connecting with family and your unique, personal achievements? Wouldn’t that feel better?
